Last week, CapWealth’ Chief Investment Strategist John Lueken participated in Baron Capital’s (the parent company of Baron Funds) Annual Rocky Mountain Think Tank Roundtable in Vail Colorado. He and ten of his peers from across the nation—all successful investment research leaders at their respective firms—joined Baron portfolio managers and executives to a private, intimate retreat to discuss investment trends and strategies.
According to Frank Maiorano, Vice President and Head of RIA and Family Office Group, Baron Capital, the criteria for invitation was simple but set at a high bar: selectees must be a principal or highly engaged at research at his or her firm and selectees must be “willing to engage in dialogue—aka, ‘mix it up’ with ten of your peers and some of Baron Capital’s leadership.” In introducing the roundtable to the participants, Mr. Maiorano explained, “We have assembled a small group of best-of-breed RIAs [registered investment advisors], along with key Baron Investment and Leadership individuals. We look to embark on great conversation, getting to know one another, sharing our ideas and challenges and, mostly, entering into spirited, insightful, valuable dialogue. What to bring? An open mind, your ideas, spirited dialogue and NO presentations.”
Over the course of the August 24-26 retreat held at The Lodge at Vail hotel, the roundtable participants discussed topics as diverse as the energy marketplace, robo-investing, single-stock investment ideas and emerging markets to disruptive innovation, Millennial trends, the possible investment impact of the upcoming Presidential election and best practices.
John enjoyed the Think Tank Roundtable immensely: “It was a wonderful opportunity to build meaningful relationships with a select group of financial professionals. The conversations were wide-ranging, philosophical, thought-provoking and educational—I believe for everyone. Being challenged to defend or reassess an investment decision is the best environment to develop and improve one’s own critical thinking abilities, and hearing other very smart, very successful investors’ ideas helps to enlarge one’s own thinking and imagination. Those are great things to bring back to CapWealth and the work we do for our clients.”
We congratulate John on his inclusion in such as select event, and we thank Mr. Maiorano and the Baron Funds team not only for their generosity but for their thought leadership in hosting such an event!
